Winter Update

The recording of our latest EP 'When Traditions No Longer Answer Our Questions' is nearly complete and after hearing a rough mix of 'Windows of Our Times Collide', we can't wait to share more of our tunes with everyone.

For us as music fans, we love going into a music shop and buying a physical copy of an album but sadly these days, nobody really buys an actual CD, so we're looking at putting the new EP on iTunes and only ordering a limited number of physical ones; so be alert and get one sharpish when the time comes!

We are pretty packed with gigs leading upto Christmas and also have a radio appearance on Kingdom Cuts (check them at their new home at Existenceradio.co.uk) booked as well (full gig listings at the end of the post).  There's no official EP launch booked as of yet but watch this space!

NEWS AND GIG UPDATES

We were delighted to feature in Jim Gellatly's New Music column in The Sun the other week.  It was great exposure for us not only in the national press, but also on the airwaves. Jim was good enough to play 'Sometimes' on his In Demand show on Tay FM, Forth FM and Northsound Radio.

We also made a fan in the shape of Reverend and the Makers, who heard us on Jim's show whilst they were being interviewed.  If you missed The Sun that day, here's the press clipping for you:

We are well under way with the new EP 'When Traditions No Longer Answer Our Questions', which should hopefully be finished by mid-November.  The record shall feature (in no certain order): 'Windows of our Times Collide', 'Everywhere is Here, 'A Little Precarious'. 'Light is Rising' and an acoustic version of 'Keep On'.  As with 'Tomorrow Belongs to a World Apart', we're working with Chris Kay from Cancel The Astronauts and recording it at his studio in Markinch.



It's great to see Kingdom Cuts up and running again, people like Kev Quinn and Jim are important to unsigned bands and they do a great job, so tune into the show! On the gig front we're busy as always.  We played a new live music night at Glasgow's Buff Club on Friday there and are a late edition to the bill for Oxjam at Electric Circus in Edinburgh this Thursday.  Cancel The Astronauts and Matt Norris and the Moon are also on that rather stellar looking line up and it's for a good cause!

THE BEAUTIFUL SLEAZY

These Cambridge-based rockers are a cracking psychedelic garage rock band- think of Kasabian and T-Rex and you're in the right direction.  Their 70s guitar riffs and stunning vocals from frontman Dan Cahill have seen this band earn a sterling reputation for their live set up and down the country, which has earned them slots on both BBC Introducing's live stages and radio shows.   They recently released their debut album 'All fired up', which you can buy on iTunes, so go buy it!

CANCEL THE ASTRONAUTS

THIS QUIRKY five-piece from Edinburgh recently released their debut album 'Animal Love Match' to critical acclaim.  These guys have been around for a few years now and have gone from strength to strength ever since. They can boast such achievements as a live set for Vic Galloway, a support slot with both Graham Coxon and Frightened Rabbit, and playing T in the Park in 2011.

This is indie-pop music at it's original and best; their melodic guitar hooks and synth driven-sound, coupled with a powerful, rocky drum beat provide the stage for singer Matt's fantastic lyrics and emotive vocal delivery. Just as the music threatens to get a little 'too pop', they throw in a healthy bit of ambient shoegazey guitars to keep things fresh. 'Sometimes' OFFICIAL video

Finally it's here!! This is our first full band video for our song 'Sometimes' from the 'Tomorrow belongs to a world apart' EP.  It was filmed with the excellent Little City Pictures in and around our rehearsal studio in Markinch and Kirkcaldy.

We are delighted with the results and enjoyed working with Steve and Chris on the project.  We wanted to keep a 'what you see is what you get' type video, as that's what we are as a band - no costumes and no gimmicks, just as bands like the Stone Roses and Oasis  did it back in the glory days.

Live acoustic set

This is a video of a recent performance we done at Bannermans in Edinburgh.  Our regular guitar man, Smithy, had to pull out at the last minute; so Mikey, Daz and I ran through 'Keep On', 'The Rain Must Fall', 'Velvet Sunburst' and 'Sometimes'. 

This was filmed by Little City Pictures who also done the 'Sometimes' video that should be with us by the end of the week.  They've recently done a video for Edinburgh singer/songwriter Callum Beattie and rockers Xavia so check them out on YouTube.

Been a while...

... but we're pleased to announce the blog is up and running again!

So... what's been happening with us? We've been busy gigging up and down the country as usual the last few weeks following the release of 'Tomorrow belongs to a world apart'. We've met some cool people, good bands and managed to write a few new tunes to add to our set along the way.

August saw us do an acoustic instore gig at HMV on Buchanan St. in Glasgow to launch our EP 'Tomorrow belongs to a world apart' as well as a show at Elvis Shakespeare in Edinburgh.  It was cool for us not only to see our EP physcially in a shop but to do more intimate gigs in a different setting.

We also filmed our first full band video for 'Sometimes' with Little City pictures, which is looking amazing! Hopefully it'll be completed toward the end of next week.

We also filmed a live acoustic gig with the boys from Little City and are hoping to use it, along with the 'Sometimes' video, to do a little sort of  'premiere' of them and a Q/A somewhere in Edinburgh, hopefully at the end of October.

Gig wise we are playing Flat 0/1 in Glasgow on Saturday the 15th so get along to that if you can it's a great venue and one of our favs.

After what can only be described as probably the shitest weekend the band's had to endure so far, we are absolutely delighted to fire our EP for you to have a good listen to. All four tracks are up in their entirety so go have a listen and see what you think! Downloads and CDs will be ready for next week.

It took a lot of hours in the studio, a lot of ideas bouncing off one another, and ultimately a shitload of hard graft and late nights to get this ready. It took a little longer than we hoped but we're sure you're gonna' love it! Many thanks to our good friend Chris Kay for recording and producing it for us, you guys might also know him as the drummer from the ace Edinburgh band Cancel the Astronauts.

We're also doing an interview and having one of the tunes played on Kingdom FM this week! Tune in at half 9 on Thursday night to hear myself and Daz talking about what we've been up to and what the plans are for the band's future!

If you like what you hear of the new songs, please pass the word on! Bottom line is, no matter how hard we work we are never gonna' get anywhere without a lot of word of mouth niceties! Fingers crossed this propels us on a bit and we can start playing some really big epic shows for you guys and gals!

EP Release Date Set - well pretty close anyway!

Well we've finally decided on a realistic date to get the EP out there people! Pretty confident it'll be the best thing you've all heard in a long time - we've really gone for it on this one (hence why it's taken us so fucking long to finish)

Anyway - May is when it's out, what day in May, we're not really sure yet. It'll definitely be sometime between the 1st and whatever the last day of the month is though! (no idea how many days there are in May and I can't be fucked checking)

The EP is gonna' be available as a download for you trendy motherfuckers that have Ipods and Itunes and all that nonsense! But, if you're like ourselves and like a proper bit of music to own and cherish, there'll also be a proper CD release! The links to buy both will be on their way to you soon, likely to be £3 to download the 4 tracks or a £5 to buy the hard copy CD!

A year and counting...

We're edging ever closer to getting our first EP as a full band released! We've got the first draft on this incredibly high-tec, fancy CD-R complete with hand-drawn lettering and peace symbol! When you get your copy this won't be the case by the way, they'll look a bit more like a proper CD. Actually, come to think of it they'll look a lot more like a 7" vinyl - those CDs are cool as feck!

Anyway, what a great first year it's been for the band. Seems like only a month or two back that Daz was touring the acoustic circuit on his lonesome, making a good name for himself. I went along to watch him and his bro Mikey play at the Box on Sauchiehall street in February 2011 and immediately heard the songwriting ability those lads had! Having been out of the music scene for almost 4 years I convinced the lads to let me have another bash at being the noisy fucker that fannies about at the side of the stage - glad they said yes! Phil, aka Stavros the Greek, was recruited to rock the bass guitar again. Despite never having had any lessons on how to play, he more than made up for it by having the flashiest, coolest shoes in the band!

In this first year we've had some pretty damn good times! Our first gig was supporting a guy called Adam from We Were Promised Jetpacks (not the friendliest guy we've ever met to be brutally honest), but to make our debut at a venue like The Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh was very cool. Many thanks to Tony and Stuart at RubberStamp for that! We played a few shows after, Whistlebinkies a couple of times, then the Greenside in Leslie, through to the Box again! Took us a few months to get our first Dundee gigs but man were they worth the wait! 2 gigs at Dexter's which were nothing short of spectacular, and a great show at the latest incarnation of the Doghouse where the sound was verging on perfection!

In addition to this we've been played by Steve Lamacq on Radio 6 down in England. We also got airplay on BBC Introducing up here in Scotland, as well as interviews on Kingdom FM and Splash Radio! Pretty cool considering our first year goal was to have a ten song set and get some local gigs!

Not always plain-sailing obviously, nothing ever is! We had an absolute shiter at the Box a few months back. The bill was weird that night, very strange mix of bands. We arrived at 6pm that night (and still weren't offered a soundcheck) and sat through a young lad with an acoustic who was pretty damn inaudible. Then a kind of Green Day meets Blink 182 band, followed up by a bunch of really angry, shouty girl punk rockers singing songs about how all men are cunts! Wasn't exactly ideal warm up material for us, a bunch of normal 90s indie-loving shoegazers to stroll on stage and do our thing.

An absolutely packed venue couldn't have given a fuck who we were or what type of tunes we played! Bad vibes from the word go to be honest. We soldiered on, thought "ah fuck it" and fired through the set. The sound guy didn't know how to hook up an acoustic guitar properly and kept changing the levels while we were on stage - it sounded shite, and we knew it sounded shite! Fucking hard to enjoy yourself when you know everyone in the room just wants the noise to stop! Cut the set short, bailed off and decided to not head back to that venue till they sorted their shit out! To be totally honest from what I've heard through the grapevine, they still haven't!

Since then though we've been having a great laugh, met some cool as fuck people and been getting a good bit of exposure! We even won a public vote on Kingdom FM for being Fife's best live band - we were well happy about that! If you've ever seen us live (you really should you know) you'll know that's the part we enjoy the most and take most pride in! It's loud, beautiful and melodic! You should come along, take some substances (if that's your cup of tea) and get lost in a properly trippy wall of dreamy indie anthems!

New tunes/new versions and a new gig!

Belter of a band practice tonight! Dazvader (pictured above in a rather fetching Stone Roses tshirt) has written a cracking new tune we'll be working on in the coming weeks!

In addition to this, we've had a wee muck about with the live version of The Rain Must Fall, that classic indie-pop song you guys know and love, and turned it into a snarling rock 'n' roll tune! Just good to mix it up a bit sometimes eh? If you get along to the Venue in Methil on the 28 April (10 days) you'll be able to hear us debut it, plus there's a shitload of other bands on too!

The first of many...

Welcome to the first blog update for Calm as the Colour. This is the first place you should come to for any news about what the band is getting up to. Sometimes it'll just be about us messing about and doing stupid shite, sometimes it'll be useful stuff about when gigs are on and when CDs are getting released etc.

Last Saturday the band played a gig in Glasgow's Stairway venue. We took some great friends along for the trip and enjoyed the hell out of our night. The venue is shit hot, the live sound is great and the lights on stage make you feel like you're on a permo! The crowd turnout was pretty decent, and we're pretty sure we took another step towards establishing ourselves through in Glasgow. There were some other ace bands on the night too and all in all it was another great gig put on by Kev from Cast the Net promotions! Big thankyou to everyone that came along to see us on the night as well, whether we know you personally or not!

The trip back to Fife was great. Two cars left, one was the wagon driven by myself, filled with friends who came to the gig, ace banter and some Dr Dre on the stereo to make us feel like gangsters! The other was the Roymobile (a silver Ford Fiesta if you're at all curious) with Phil, Mikey and Daz inside. We eventually bumped into eachother on the roads home and had ourselves a mini drag race in the run up to the bridge, fingers were raised and wanker signs were made from the windows - good fucking times!

The band are back in the studio this week, trying desperately to get our new EP 'Tomorrow Belongs to a World Apart' finished as soon as possible! It's sounding really, really great - probably better than we ever anticipated and we cannot wait to get it out there. We've found a company that's gonna' manufacture them for us so the CDs look like little 7" vinyls, gonna' be cool as milk!

We're back in the studio tonight to practise for some upcoming shows. We've been working on a rocked up version of The Rain Must Fall which to be honest is sounding fucking mega!
